WD’s 2025 CDP Climate Results: Advancing Sustainability Through Bold Action

WD’s 2025 CDP Climate Results: Advancing Sustainability Through Bold Action

We received an A‑ score for climate in the latest 2025 Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) assessment cycle. This Leadership level result, including an A supplier engagement rating, stands as a reflection of years of disciplined efforts to integrate sustainability into our business strategy and operations—driving measurable progress against our robust goals while continuously enhancing transparency on our strategy, targets, and actions.

CDP operates the world’s most comprehensive and recognized independent environmental disclosure system, serving as a gold standard for companies to report data on material topics like climate change. CDP’s scoring framework is designed to recognize companies that demonstrate transparency, governance, strategy, risk management, targets, and tangible performance in environmental sustainability. Our 2025 score demonstrates WD’s leading efforts and positive impacts on the planet.

How we earned an A‑ in climate

Our climate efforts are bolstered by strong commitments that we have translated into concrete action and measurable progress.

Set robust climate targets

We committed to net zero emissions across global operations by FY2032, backed by intermediate targets aligned with climate science. Beyond our own operations, we also work to reduce most material value chain emissions—including efforts to reduce direct materials emissions by 20% by FY2030 based on a FY2024 baseline and reducing Scope 3 emissions from customer use of products by 50% per petabyte by FY2030 versus a FY2020 base year.

These commitments are more than aspirational—they are woven into the life cycle of our products, from design to manufacturing to distributions, and into how we operate as a company.

Delivered substantial emissions reductions

We realized a 36.3% reduction in operational emissions compared to our baseline, bringing us materially closer to our targets. We have also achieved a 29% reduction in emissions from customer use of products per petabyte, reflecting the positive environmental impact we can have on the planet by designing more efficient storage technologies.

A major part of our emissions reduction strategy is accelerating clean energy transition. Nearly 44% of our energy consumption was from renewable sources, and we are advancing toward our goal of 100% carbon‑free energy across our facilities by FY2030.

Spearheaded a breakthrough in circularity

To amplify our longstanding efforts to embed sustainability into our products’ design and manage environmental impacts throughout the life cycle, we spearheaded the Advanced Recovery and Rare Earth Material Capture Program in partnership with Microsoft, Critical Materials Recycling, and PedalPoint. This innovative and industry-leading initiative captured rare earths from obsolete hard drives that were historically lost within e-waste recovery or landfills. Based on life cycle analysis methodology, there is an estimated 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for procuring rare earths this way compared to traditional mining and processing practices. Now, our customers have yet another means by which our technology can help accelerate their own sustainability goals.

Strengthened governance and reporting

Our Board of Directors prioritizes strong corporate responsibility as a foundation for the company’s long-term success. We maintain executive oversight on our global sustainability strategy and programs and integrate sustainability to drive performance, deliver excellence to customers, and support innovation at scale.

We recognize the importance of transparent disclosure as evidenced by our Annual Sustainability Report, website on our sustainability workstreams, and Climate Disclosure Project participation. Our third-party assured data underscores our commitment to credible, trustworthy sustainability information that further drives accountability.

This combination of strategy, accountability, and action supports the Leadership level climate score WD received.

Driving continuous improvement

Our 2025 CDP results validate the depth of our sustainability commitments and the seriousness with which we pursue them. An A‑ score for climate affirms that our approach is strategic, measurable, and performance‑oriented.

And we recognize there is more we can do to continue delivering meaningful impact for our business, our stakeholders, and the planet. These scores reinforce what we believe: that sustainable practices and business performance support each other, and that transparent reporting—through frameworks like CDP—helps drive continuous improvement in environmental stewardship, accountability, and stakeholder trust.
