One of my favorite moments of WD Elevate was celebrating this year’s inventor honorees from our Northern California sites. 

Innovation is one of WD’s core values, but innovation doesn’t happen only through major breakthroughs. It happens every day, in ways both big and small. It happens when someone finds a better way to solve a problem, challenges an assumption, improves a process, or pursues an idea others might overlook. 

At WD, our inventors are at the heart of our work. 

Every patent, trade secret, and technical breakthrough begins with curiosity. It starts with someone asking a question, exploring a possibility, or refusing to accept that there isn’t a better answer. Behind every invention is a Driver who saw an opportunity to think differently and had the determination to turn an idea into something real. 

That’s why recognizing our inventors is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. 

As Chief Legal Officer, I have the privilege of seeing innovation from a unique perspective. I see ideas evolve into patents, protected technologies, and intellectual property that help strengthen our business and support the solutions our customers rely on every day. But what inspires me most isn’t the IP itself. It’s the people behind it. 

This year, we recognized, from among our Northern California Drivers: 

• 86 recipients for Trade Secret Awards
• 130 recipients for Patent Filing Awards
• 92 recipients for Patent Awards 
• 43 members of our Invention Review Board 

Together, these recognitions represent hundreds of examples of innovation happening across WD. 

What makes these achievements especially meaningful is that invention rarely happens in isolation. The strongest ideas are strengthened through collaboration, diverse perspectives, and teams willing to build on one another’s thinking. Throughout WD Elevate, we saw that spirit on display as inventors, engineers, technologists, and leaders came together to share ideas, learn from one another, and celebrate the work that continues to move WD forward. 

As our industry enters an era defined by AI and unprecedented growth in data, innovation has never been more important. The challenges ahead are complex, but so are the opportunities. Meeting that moment will require people who are willing to ask difficult questions, challenge conventional thinking, and imagine what comes next. 

That’s exactly what our inventors do every day. 

To all of this year’s Northern California inventor honorees, thank you for your creativity, persistence, and commitment to advancing technology. I look forward to additional events being planned to honor inventors from other WD sites. Your ideas help shape WD’s future, strengthen our innovation culture, and inspire others to pursue what’s possible.
