Scale with Confidence: Ultrastar DC SS530 SAS SSDs

Western Digital is excited to announce the new Ultrastar® DC SS530 SAS SSD, our company’s highest-density drive and the fastest dual-port SAS SSD on the market. The Ultrastar DC SS530 doubles the maximum capacity compared to the prior-generation SAS SSD to a whopping 15.36TB1. Its performance sets new industry records among SAS SSDs with up to 440,000 random read operations per second and up to 320,000 random write operations per second2. The Ultrastar DC SS530 continues to push storage boundaries for SAS SSDs, providing the much needed horsepower required to handle massive increases in both structured and unstructured data for mission-critical data warehouse and cloud applications.

What Can 15TB in a Single Drive Do?

Let’s take a moment to think about what this high capacity SSD can do. One major tech company made available to the public a 13.5TB (or 13,500GB) data set that contains approximately 110 billion user interactions of its various online properties. That dataset can now fit within a single Ultrastar DC SS530 SSD which can provide sufficient performance to drive high-throughput data mining activities used in AI and machine learning algorithms.

SAS Interfaces for Flexibility and High Availability

The SAS interface is a well understood and reliable way to scale drive counts to 48 or 60 drives in a 4U server. Using the Ultrastar DC SS530 it now becomes possible to deploy up to 737TB to 921TB of blazing-fast solid-state storage in a single server.  Alternatively, you could pair the Ultrastar DC SS530 with Western Digital’s 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530 hard drive in a hybrid configuration to balance high density and performance in software-defined storage environments, minimizing TCO.  This flexibility of easily choosing between hard drives and SSDs is one of the major benefits of the SAS interface.

Another major benefit of the Ultrastar DC SS530’s SAS interface is its dual-port configuration.  The SAS connector on the drive can connect to two different SAS controllers, which allows for seamless transitions in the case of server or connectivity failures and helps ensure that the data you need is available when you need it.

SAS Storage for AFAs and Hybrid Arrays

Most All-Flash Arrays (AFAs) and Hybrid Arrays in the market today leverage the SAS protocol.  The Ultrastar DC SS530 enables the producers of these storage systems to maintain their existing investment in SAS storage while providing their customers with even higher performance and double the storage density.

Keeping Private Data Private in 2018 and Beyond

With increasing global regulations for data privacy and the increasing consequences of non-compliance, data protection and security are top-of-mind for IT professionals today.  The Ultrastar DC SS530 will offer the latest data security options, such as TCG Self-Encrypting Drives (SED) and TCG FIPS-validated models, which are required for certain government applications.

Easing Adoption with Proven Quality and Features

Western Digital has a long history of working closely with OEM customers and providing trusted enterprise storage devices. Our proven track record of quality and support minimizes qualification efforts for OEMs and array manufacturers, and the Ultrastar DC SS530’s unique value proposition is ideal for minimizing TCO:

  • Performance—The DC SS530 delivers best-in-class performance for available dual-port SAS SSDs.
  • Reliability—Maximize array and server uptimes with a field-tested architecture and an enterprise-class MTBF rating.
  • Endurance—Provides write endurance options suitable for everything from the highest performance caching and deduplication applications down to read-intensive data warehousing deployments.
  • Security—Models are available with the capability to encrypt data at rest using both enterprise- and government-standard encryption.

1 One TB equals 1,000GB (one trillion bytes), and one GB equals one billion bytes when referring to drive capacity. Accessible capacity will vary from the stated capacity due to formatting and partitioning of the hard drive, the computer’s operating system, and other factors.

2 Based on published product specifications as of July 2018. Performance will vary by capacity point and endurance level, or with changes to useable capacity. Consult product manual for further details. All performance measurements are in full sustained mode and peak values. Subject to change.

3 MTBF and AFR specifications are based on a sample population and are estimated by statistical measurements and acceleration algorithms under typical operating conditions for this drive model. MTBF and AFR ratings do not predict an individual drive’s reliability and do not constitute a warranty.
